HUMANITATIAN AARD Background: Thomas F. McGorray was an FBI Special Agent for 25 years (1963-1987). Originally from Buffalo NY, he graduated from Oblate College and attended graduate school at Catholic University. He was a Naval Aviator for four years. He joined the FBI in 1963, serving in Atlanta, GA; Monterey, CA; Washington, DC: New Haven, CT; FBIHQ; Tucson, AZ; and Sacramento, CA. Tom’s FBI career was very diverse. For example, he worked Civil Rights and Klan cases, studied Polish in Monterey, CA, and worked espionage cases. He was instrumental in solving the high-profile 1969 Alex Rackley murder case, and with the indictments of Black Panther Party members, including Bobby Seal. Tom’s management assignments included: Supervisory Senior Resident Agent in Charge in Tucson, Supervisor at FBI Headquarters, and Supervisor at Sacramento, Calif. He was a Bureau Firearms Instructor, Hostage Negotiator, and Police Sex Crime Instructor. Tom retired in 1987 and currently lives in Tucson. Tom holds Private Investigator's licenses in California and Arizona, maintains a full service Investigations company, and conducts Federal background investigations (BICS) for the FBI. Tom currently operates three businesses. As accomplished and busy as he is, his resume for humanitarian service is even more impressive. Humanitarian Service: Tom ‘s life of service has been humbly dedicated to his family, the FBI, and his community. He is certainly deserving of the Foundation’s 2013 Humanitarian Service Award. As we all know, Tom has extensive computer experience. Committed to the service of others, Tom started the national homepage for ex-agents which later became the national Society website. For years, Tom has run seven listserves., for the Knights of Columbus, the Sons of Orpheus, the St Vincent de Paul Conference, The most well known to the Society is the xgboys network, which is a networking forum for over 3000 subscribed former FBI agents. Tom is deeply committed to the FBI family by connecting Agents. This has been a selfless call to action for the purpose of sharing law enforcement news with fellow Agents. This includes health information, news of interest, death notices, retirement notices, and service martyr recognition. Each week, Tom spends many hours administering the xgboys network, and he does this without charging subscribers. Tom has been a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI since his retirement in 1987. He has served as Secretary, Vice Chairman, and Chairman for the Tucson Chapter. He is described as the “glue” that keeps the Tucson Chapter going. For twenty years, he has edited and published the monthly newsletter "Tucson Credentials." He co-chaired the Tucson Western Regional Conference in1998. He served as Chairman of the Internet Committee and originated the Society's internet home page. Tom has served on the Long Range Planning Committee, the Communications Committee, the Information Committee, and the Grapevine Committee. He is currently on the Sun Valley Host Committee. In addition to Tom’s FBI career and his generous efforts on behalf of ex-Agents, there is much about Tom that many of us do not know. The rest of this submission will summarize Tom’s other humanitarian efforts. For many years, Tom has shared his computer skills with others. He teaches computer classes to adults at the Catalina Foothills School. Classes have included Internet Basics, Internet Software, Netscape, Eudora, News Watcher, HTML Scripting, Home Page Design, Genealogy on the Internet, Intermediate Claris Works, Quicken. Desk Top Publishing, and 101 Things to do with a Mac. Tom is actively involved with the Tucson MAC Users Group (THUG), and since 1988 has attended monthly meetings. For the past 13 years he has published the group’s monthly newsletter, “Tucson Mac”. Among his community volunteer efforts, Tom has coached little league hockey in Washington, DC, and in Tucson. Every month, Tom can be spotted sorting donated food at St Vincent de Paul, where boxes are being prepared for various Parishes and especially during the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas. . For the last fifteen years, at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Tom is a Sacristan and a lecture at daily and Sunday Mass. Tom has shared the gift of his tenor voice throughout his life. He has been a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Quartet Singing in America for over forty-four years. Over the years, he sang with several Society Chapters, and with several Quartets, including "Sounds of the Motherlode," and "Chord-inary Guys," and currently with “Matinee Idles”. He founded of the Nevada-Placer Chapter in Auburn California. . Singing First Tenor, Tom has taken part in concerts in Germany, Hungary, Austria, England, and Italy. For Tom, singing is a way to bring joy to the lives of others and to raise money for charitable causes. He has been singing with the Tucson Sunshine Chorus for the past 25 years on a weekly basis. With the Matinee Idol Quartet over the last six years, he gives about 20 performances a year, primarily for seniors who cannot seek out entertainment on their own. With the Star Spangled Seniors over the last two years, he has sung over 140 concerts for occupants of assisted living and nursing homes. With the Sons of Orpheus over the last 13 years, he sings about three times a month, fundraising for charitable causes and providing free concerts. Each year the Sons raise over $100,000 for the restoration of Mission del Bac, and in December over $49,000 for the Tucson Community Food Bank. Since 1987, Tom has edited four newsletters. As described above, he edits the Tucson Society Chapter newsletter, "Tucson Credentials.” In addition, he edited "Sounds of the Mother Lode" and "Tucson Sunshine Sayings." This latter publication has won regional honors for its originality and humor. He also edited for several years, a quarterly newsletter for the Diocese of Tucson called "Pathways" which went out to 1000 readers. Tom has a keen interest in genealogy and has taught classes in this area. On behalf of his family, he spent many years travelling extensively to identify members of his family tree. Tom is an avid sports enthusiast who has played handball most of his life. Other sports of interest include tennis, baseball, softball, football, basketball, and hockey. Tom is married to Carolyn. He has seven children and twelve grandchildren. Tom’s son, Matthew, has been a quadriplegic for the past 22 years. While Matthew has in home care most of the time, Tom spends much of his time and serves as one of Matt’s primary caregivers.
